Solar battery installation in Wollongong

Most of what decides a battery is the same wherever you live: what your house draws after dark, what your roof makes during the day, and what the federal discount takes off the invoice. We work all three out the same way in Coniston as in Canberra, and how big a battery your house needs is the piece worth reading before you talk to anyone.

Three things are genuinely different in the Illawarra. They are the reason this page exists instead of pointing you at the Canberra one.

The loan is a NSW loan, and it is not the ACT scheme

New South Wales runs its own offer. Home Energy Saver: up to $15,000 at 0% interest, for households under a $210,000 income test. That is a different instrument from the ACT's Sustainable Household Scheme. The cap is different, the rate is different, and it carries an income test the ACT scheme does not have. So a figure you read on a Canberra installer's site is very likely the wrong one for you. The federal discount is national, and it steps down

The Cheaper Home Batteries discount applies in Wollongong exactly as it does anywhere else, because it is a federal programme. It comes off the invoice on the day. Nothing arrives later. the first 14 kWh of usable capacity counts in full, the next 14 kWh at 60%, anything above 28 kWh at 15%. the rate steps down every six months until 2030

What that means in practice is that the same battery is worth less to buy next year than this year, and that is the one urgency claim in this market that is true and government-published. Your network is Endeavour Energy, not Evoenergy

Every grid-connected battery needs the distributor's approval before it is switched on, and the Illawarra sits on Endeavour Energy. Their application and their export rules are theirs, and they are not the ones that apply in the ACT. We check what yours allows before quoting rather than after, because an export limit found late is the thing that changes a system design once the deposit is paid.

What we install, and what we would tell you not to

Most of what we put in is a Tesla Powerwall. It is one 13.5 kWh unit with the solar inverter built in, and for a single-phase home with an evening load worth shifting it is the most straightforward battery to live with. It will not run a house off-grid, and our review of it says so along with the rest of what it does not do. If you already own an older unit, the Powerwall 2 page covers the upgrade path and the Australian recall; if you want more storage than one unit holds, the Expansion Pack is the cheaper way to get it than a second full battery.

It is not the only answer. Enphase suits a roof that needs per-panel control, and the GoodWe ESA is a second right answer on a tighter budget. If a battery is not going to pay for itself in your house we will say so — that is the whole of how we work, and it costs us a sale often enough to be worth stating.
