NSW Home Energy Saver Loan

What is the NSW Home Energy Saver program?

1

The NSW Home Energy Saver program is designed to make energy saving home upgrades more affordable by reducing the upfront cost barrier.

For many households, solar, batteries and efficient electric appliances make strong long term sense, but the initial cost can delay action. This program gives eligible NSW homeowners and landlords a way to spread the cost of approved upgrades over time without paying interest on the loan.

The loan can be used for a single upgrade or a planned package of improvements, depending on your home, budget and energy goals.

What upgrades can the loan be used for?

2

The Home Energy Saver loan can help fund approved energy saving upgrades such as:

  • Solar panels

  • Home battery storage

  • Solar and battery systems

  • EV level 2 chargers

  • Heat pump hot water systems

  • Reverse cycle air conditioning

  • Switchboard upgrades

  • Induction cooking

  • Ceiling insulation

  • Draught proofing

  • Double glazing

  • DC ceiling fans

  • NatHERS assessments

For Sunstak customers, the most relevant upgrades are usually solar, batteries, EV charging, hot water heat pumps and reverse cycle air conditioning. These upgrades work best when they are considered together rather than treated as separate purchases.

Who may be eligible?

3

You may be eligible for the NSW Home Energy Saver loan if:

  • You own the property as an owner occupier or landlord

  • The property is located in NSW

  • Your combined annual taxable household income is up to $210,000

  • You are an Australian citizen or permanent resident

  • You meet the finance provider’s credit assessment requirements

  • The property is not social housing or used for short stay accommodation

  • The upgrade meets program requirements and is installed by an approved supplier

Eligibility is assessed by participating finance providers. Loan approval is not guaranteed.

Can the loan be used with the federal battery rebate?

4

Yes, in many cases the NSW Home Energy Saver loan may be used alongside the federal home battery rebate where the system and customer meet the relevant program requirements.

This is important because the federal battery rebate can reduce the upfront cost of an eligible battery, while the NSW loan may help eligible households spread the remaining cost over time.

For many NSW homes, this creates a stronger window to consider solar and battery together, or to add a battery to an existing solar system.

What about the $4,000 discount?

5

The NSW Government has announced discounts of up to $4,000 for eligible households, expected to open later in 2026.

These discounts are aimed at households with combined annual income up to $80,000 or eligible concession card holders.

If you may qualify for both the discount and the loan, NSW Government guidance says you should apply for the discount first, then apply for a loan to cover the remaining eligible cost.

Is this a grant or a loan?

6

The Home Energy Saver loan is not a grant.

It is a zero interest loan that must be repaid over the approved loan term. The advantage is that eligible households may be able to install approved upgrades now and repay the borrowed amount over time without interest charges.

The separate discount program is different. It is expected to provide up to $4,000 off eligible upgrades for qualifying households once applications open.

Why planning matters

A zero interest loan can make an upgrade easier to start, but the right design still matters.

A battery that is too small may not cover your evening use. A solar system that is too limited may not support future electrification. An EV charger installed without thinking about solar, tariffs and load management may miss opportunities to charge more cheaply.

A good home energy system should be designed around where your household is going over the next 5 to 10 years.

That may include:

  • Adding a battery

  • Replacing gas hot water

  • Moving from gas heating to reverse cycle air conditioning

  • Installing induction cooking

  • Adding an EV charger

  • Using more solar during the day

  • Improving backup power during outages
Reducing reliance on the grid during peak periods

Sunstak can help you work through the right sequence so the loan supports a system that makes sense for your home, not just the first product that fits the budget.
