What upgrade options are available for Powerwall 2 owners?
If your home already has Powerwall 2 installed, there are several possible upgrade paths depending on your system configuration, energy usage and future electrification plans.
Option 1
Add additional storage by installing a new Powerwall 3 system
In many cases the most practical upgrade is installing a new Powerwall 3 system alongside your existing Powerwall 2 system. This provides significantly more storage capacity and higher output power while maintaining your existing battery investment.
Option 2
Install Powerwall 3 with expansion packs for large capacity systems
Powerwall 3 supports stackable expansion packs, allowing total storage capacity to grow significantly beyond a single battery.
This is ideal for homes with:
electric vehicles
large solar systems
high evening energy consumption
plans to electrify heating and hot water
Option 3
Replace older Powerwall units with a Powerwall 3 system
Some homeowners choose to replace their existing battery system with Powerwall 3 and expansion packs. This approach creates a modern unified system with higher performance and future expansion capability.
Supported System Configuration
At launch, Tesla has indicated the following configuration will be supported:
Up to 4 x Powerwall 2 units
1 x Powerwall 3
Up to 3 x Powerwall 3 x Expansion Packs
For homes connected to a three phase grid, Powerwall 3 output will be limited to 5 kW.
Installation must be completed by a Tesla Certified Installer to ensure correct integration and warranty compliance.
